At the beginning of 2020, you may have seen articles advising that you write out the entire year of “2020” rather than just “20” in an effort to prevent backdating. While you should always be careful to accurately date your documents, mistakes do happen. So what do you do when you think a document has been altered?

Altered Check

The above check appears to be written out for $21,000.00 (left). Using state-of-the-art scientific equipment, we at KDX Forensic Consulting, LLC are able to examine the check non-destructively in an effort to look for alterations. Using specific light and filter combinations, we are able to view infrared luminescence revealing that the check was originally written in the amount of $1,000.00 (right).

Both the original ink used to write the check and the ink utilized to make the alteration visually appear to be black inks and may pass an inspection by a bank teller or other lay person.
